PALM BEACH PETE
In March 2026 a stranger filmed a 71-year-old retired real estate executive driving a convertible down I-95 and posted it as proof that Jeffrey Epstein was alive. The driver's name is Peter Simel. He has been telling people so ever since, and the question his drive reopened is what happened in a Manhattan jail cell in 2019.
On March 12, 2026, a TikTok user posted a few seconds of a gray-haired man driving a convertible down Interstate 95 in South Florida, with text on the screen saying the driver was Jeffrey Epstein [1]. Off camera a voice shouts "Epstein's alive!" [3]. Epstein had been dead for six years and seven months.
The driver had no idea. "I had my phone down for about four hours, didn't know it was blowing up," he told WPEC, the CBS station in West Palm Beach [2]. He was on his way into town for lunch and tennis.
A week later, on March 19, he opened an account on X under the handle @not_jeffepstein and posted a video of himself saying, "I'm not Jeffrey Epstein. I'm 'Palm Beach Pete!'" [1]. He gave interviews the next day. To TMZ: "I could be the guy, but I'm not the guy" [4]. To WPEC: "I have nothing to do with Jeffrey Epstein. He's a very bad person, and he is dead, and I'm alive" [2].
His name is Peter Simel. He was 71 that spring, a retired commercial real estate executive who had lived and worked in New York City, a former Division I tennis player who went on to compete in International Tennis Federation masters events [3][5]. Epstein was born in January 1953 and would have been 73.
Snopes took up the video on March 23 and rated the claim Miscaptioned. Its reviewer set the driver beside an authenticated photograph of Epstein and listed what did not match. The driver has the fuller lower lip, where Epstein's photographs show a larger upper one. The ears differ too, in the angle of the intertragal notch and in the shape of the concha and the antihelix [1].
Some of the resemblance is plain coincidence, and Simel has heard the list. A podcast host read it to him: both men from New York, about the same age, both Jewish, both living in Palm Beach. Simel called that "pretty weird" and put the rest down to people's "vivid imaginations" [4]. He has also said he went to a couple of parties where Epstein was present, and remembered him as "creepy," sitting on a couch and "staying to himself" [5].
Then he kept the name. By the end of May he had an Instagram account called @not.epstein, campaign hats for sale reading "Palm Beach Pete for Mayor 2028," and a platform he laid out for Fox News Digital: free Botox for every resident of Palm Beach, a convertible for a year, more pickleball courts, and New York City water brought in for the pizza and the bagels. No one can qualify for that race until 2027, and county election records showed that nobody had [3]. "We had 200,000 followers in less than two days," he said, "and I got deplatformed" [3].
Other people have added to the story without him. On August 30, 2026, an Instagram reel announced that Palm Beach Pete had a girlfriend named Lishgaine who looked exactly like Ghislaine Maxwell. Lead Stories traced her to a TikTok account and ran four of its images through an AI-detection service. Three scored 100 percent and the fourth 76.5. Lishgaine is an anagram of Ghislaine. Maxwell was in a federal prison camp in Bryan, Texas [6].
Who was driving the convertible is settled, by the man who was driving it. The older question the video reopened, what happened in a Manhattan jail cell on August 10, 2019, is in the other folder.

Peter Simel is Peter Simel. The claim his drive revived is about another man, and it comes in versions that cannot all be true together. Each is set out here with where it started and what the record says back.
He did not die in 2019
This one is as old as the death. Three days after Epstein was found, FactCheck.org was already answering a Facebook post that read "Not a chance he is dead" and had been shared thousands of times. The post rested on one New York Post photograph of Epstein on a gurney outside New York Downtown Hospital, and on two observations about it: the body was not covered, and the skin looked pink [1]. The 2026 version traded the gurney for a convertible. Against it stand the Bureau of Prisons statement of August 10, 2019, that he was found unresponsive in his cell at about 6:30 that morning and pronounced dead at the hospital, statements the same day from the attorney general and the U.S. attorney in Manhattan, an autopsy by the city's chief medical examiner, and her ruling of August 16: cause of death hanging, manner of death suicide [1].
He died, and it was not suicide
This is the version with a credentialed dissenter. Dr. Michael Baden, a former New York City chief medical examiner hired by Epstein's brother to watch the autopsy, said on television in October 2019 that the fractures in the neck were more consistent with homicidal strangulation than with hanging [3]. The medical examiner stood by her ruling. In June 2023 the Justice Department's inspector general published what the jail's own staff had done that night, and called it "numerous and serious failures": the officers on his unit had skipped their rounds and falsified the logs, and he had been left without a cellmate. The same report records that the FBI investigated the death and found no criminality in it [2]. A two-page memo from the department and the FBI in July 2025 said the same, and added that enhanced footage showed nobody entering the area where he was held [4]. Whoever believes this version needs Epstein dead, which rules out the man on I-95.
The jail video was altered
The July 2025 memo came with hours of footage from the jail, and viewers found that its clock jumps from 11:58 p.m. to midnight. Attorney General Pam Bondi said the Bureau of Prisons had told her the system resets every night, so the same minute is missing every night [5]. Within days WIRED and outside forensic analysts read the file's metadata. The video published as raw had been assembled from at least two clips in Adobe Premiere Pro and saved at least four times in a 23-minute session on May 23, 2025, and one of the source clips ran nearly three minutes longer than what was released. The same analysts said the metadata cannot show what was changed and does not prove anyone meant to deceive [6]. In those reports the department had not explained the edit.
The man in the convertible is the proof
Of the four, only this one is about Simel, and it is the only one he can answer himself. He has, on camera, more than once. It asks for a man who faked his death in federal custody and then drove with the top down through Palm Beach County, where he was first arrested in 2006. It also has to get past the ears [7].
