LYSENKOISM
The Soviet Union banned the science of genetics for a generation because one favored agronomist called it bourgeois. Crops failed, the country's best geneticist died in prison, and the ban had Stalin's backing.
Lysenkoism was the doctrine that dominated Soviet biology from the late 1930s into the 1960s, named for the agronomist Trofim Lysenko. It rejected the modern science of genetics, the study of inheritance through genes, as a hostile "bourgeois" invention, and promoted instead the older idea that organisms pass on traits they acquire during their lives. Lysenko promised that crops could be trained to withstand cold and boost yields through treatments such as chilling seeds, and he framed his claims as politically correct as well as scientifically true [1].
The science was wrong. Inheritance works through genes, acquired characteristics are not passed on in the way Lysenko claimed, and his agricultural methods did not deliver the gains he promised. What made the doctrine catastrophic was not the error alone but the power behind it. Lysenko won the favor of Joseph Stalin, and in 1948 genetics was officially condemned in the Soviet Union. Teaching and research in the field were banned, laboratories were closed, and geneticists lost their posts or worse [4].
The clearest casualty was Nikolai Vavilov, one of the great geneticists of the century, who had built the world's first major seed bank to safeguard crop diversity. Vavilov opposed Lysenko, was arrested in 1940, and died of starvation in a Soviet prison in 1943 [2]. Other scientists were dismissed, imprisoned, or forced to recant.
The cost extended to agriculture and beyond. Soviet farming lost years to methods that did not work, and the doctrine was later exported to Mao's China, where similar practices contributed to the famine of the Great Leap Forward. Genetics was rehabilitated in the Soviet Union only after Lysenko lost official protection in the 1960s [3]. Epigenetics vindicated him
A claim that grew in Russia after 2000 holds that epigenetics, the study of how gene activity can change and sometimes pass to offspring without altering the DNA sequence, shows Lysenko was right after all [1]. His central assertions, that genetics was false, that wheat could be converted into rye, and that his seed treatments reliably raised yields, remain wrong, and epigenetic inheritance is limited and gene-based rather than the open Lamarckism he preached. Historians describe the vindication claim as a nationalist rehabilitation, not a scientific one.
A political purge that used science as cover
Another reading holds that the real story was a Stalin-era power struggle, and that the scientific dispute was mostly a pretext for eliminating rivals. This fits the arrests, the recantations, and the role of state power [2]. Its limit is that Lysenko genuinely advanced false biological doctrines and blocked a true field for decades, so the science was not only a cover; the tragedy is precisely that a real scientific error was enforced by political power, with each making the other worse.
The crop damage is overstated
A narrower claim accepts the injustice to scientists but argues the agricultural harm has been inflated by Cold War framing. This deserves a hearing, since attributing entire famines to one cause is always risky and Soviet farming had many failures. What holds the mainstream view in place is that banning a productive science for a generation and exporting failed methods abroad had real, documented costs, even if the exact share of any single famine is debated [3].
