THE EXTRATEMPESTRIAL HYPOTHESIS
A Montana Tech anthropologist argues some UFO encounters may not involve aliens at all, but time-traveling humans returning from our own future to study their evolutionary past. The physics his model leans on stays disputed even among researchers who otherwise take backward time travel seriously.
The U.S. government's own investigative record does not support a time-travel explanation, or any other extraordinary one, for the bulk of reported UAP. The All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office, created inside the Pentagon in 2022 to investigate unidentified aerial phenomena, published a Historical Record Report in March 2024 stating that the aggregate findings of every U.S. government investigation to date had not found a single case of UAP representing off-world technology [1]. The report also addressed a separate and more specific claim, that the government secretly holds recovered alien or exotic material: AARO examined a piece of metal offered to investigators as evidence of an off-world craft and determined it was ordinary and of terrestrial origin [1].
Most cases AARO closes resolve to identifiable, mundane sources rather than anything unexplained at all. In its case log for the year ending June 2024, AARO resolved 49 sightings during that period, and recommended 243 more for closure pending peer review, the great majority in both groups tracing to balloons, birds, drones, satellites, or conventional aircraft [2]. That leaves a residual of cases that remain genuinely unresolved, which government reporting treats as an evidence gap rather than a reason to reach for time travel, extraterrestrial visitation, or any specific alternative explanation.
The physical mechanism the extratempestrial hypothesis depends on, backward time travel through a closed timelike curve, is itself disputed inside physics on logical rather than observational grounds. A 2022 paper by physicist Andrew Knight argues that treating backward time travel as scientifically tractable rests on an unstated and self-contradictory assumption, that changing nothing in the past is compatible with changing something in the present, and that a proposal built on a logical contradiction cannot properly be called scientific rather than pseudoscientific [3]. Closed timelike curves remain a legitimate object of study in general relativity, but no experiment has ever demonstrated one, and no physicist has proposed a way to build the exotic matter a working one would require.

Two distinct alternative readings sit under this file. Both accept that UAP reports contain a real, unexplained residue after the conventional cases are subtracted out; they disagree on what fills it.
Time-traveling human descendants
Michael Masters, a biological anthropologist who earned his PhD at Ohio State in 2009 and teaches at Montana Technological University, proposed in his 2019 book that many close-encounter reports describe not aliens but our own distant descendants, using time travel as an anthropological tool to observe their species' evolutionary past [1]. His central piece of supporting evidence is descriptive rather than physical: the beings reported across decades of encounter accounts are overwhelmingly described as bipedal, large-brained, hairless, and human in basic form, communicating in human languages, and carrying technology that reads as an extension of our own rather than something biologically or technologically alien to it [1]. His 2022 follow-up applies the same model to a set of well-documented abduction cases [2]. Masters argues this pattern fits a future-human visitor better than an evolutionarily unrelated extraterrestrial one, and he grounds the physical possibility of the trip in closed timelike curves, a real solution class in general relativity, paired with a "block time" reading of the universe in which the future already exists and a visit to the past changes nothing that has not already happened. Physicists who study the same equations do not treat that framing as settling the logical objections to backward causation, which is the specific dispute the mainstream folder addresses.
Unacknowledged advanced human technology
A narrower and more conservative reading drops the time-travel mechanism entirely and holds only that some UAP cases may represent classified human aircraft or sensor platforms whose capability exceeds what has been publicly disclosed, a claim consistent with a long documented history of secret aircraft programs eventually becoming public. Against it: AARO's own historical review, the most thorough public accounting of internal U.S. government UAP claims to date, found no reverse-engineering or exotic-craft program among the activities its investigators examined, and was able to disprove the majority of the specific insider claims brought to it [3]. That does not rule out a program AARO itself was never told about, only that the best-documented internal search for one came back empty.
