CHEMTRAILS
The claim is that the white trails behind aircraft are a deliberate spraying program. The trails are condensed water vapor, and atmospheric scientists have tested it. The uncomfortable part is that governments do fund research into spraying the sky.
A jet engine burns kerosene, and one of the products of that combustion is water. At cruising altitude the air is often around 40 degrees below zero, and when hot, humid exhaust meets it, the water condenses onto soot particles and freezes into ice crystals. That is a contrail, and the physics has been understood since the 1940s [2].
The single fact that drives the chemtrail claim is that some trails vanish in seconds and others spread into a haze that lasts for hours. That looks like two different substances. It is one substance in two different atmospheres. Whether a trail persists depends almost entirely on the humidity of the air it is released into. In dry air the ice crystals sublimate immediately and the line disappears. In air that is already supersaturated with respect to ice, the crystals do not evaporate, they grow, and the trail spreads out into a cirrus cloud that can persist for hours and drift for miles. Two planes on the same route an hour apart can leave completely different trails because the air changed, and this is predictable well enough that the aviation industry forecasts it [2].
In 2016 a group of researchers put the question to the people best placed to answer it. They surveyed 77 atmospheric chemists and geochemists, including experts on atmospheric deposition, and showed them the evidence chemtrail proponents cite most often: unusual soil and water samples, and photographs of persistent trails. Seventy-six of the 77 said they had encountered no evidence of a secret large-scale spraying program, and they identified conventional explanations for the data in every case, mostly ordinary contrail physics and sampling contamination [1].
Here is the part that makes the file uncomfortable, and it needs to be said plainly rather than buried. Deliberately putting particles into the atmosphere to cool the planet is a real field of research with real funding. It is called solar radiation management, it is discussed openly in the scientific literature, and serious people including David Keith at Harvard have spent careers on whether it could work and what it would cost [4]. Cloud seeding, a much smaller and older technology, is operational in dozens of countries and has been for decades. The United States government has a documented history of weather modification, including Operation Popeye, which extended the monsoon over the Ho Chi Minh Trail during the Vietnam War and was concealed until 1971 [3].
So the mainstream position is precise. The trails behind aircraft are condensed water vapor, and the persistent ones are persistent because of humidity, not because of cargo. And atmospheric spraying, as a concept, is not a fantasy: it is a research program, it has a precedent in a concealed military operation, and the reason chemtrails resonate is that the underlying idea is not crazy. The observation is what fails, not the imagination.

The trails are water. The claims built on them are worth reading anyway, because two of the three contain something true. Each has a traceable origin and a documented response. They are laid out in full so you can weigh them yourself.
Aircraft are spraying chemicals on the population
The core claim holds that the persistent trails carry aluminum, barium, and strontium, and that soil and rainwater samples prove it. The 2016 expert survey took exactly those samples seriously and found the levels consistent with ordinary background, with contamination during collection, and with the fact that aluminum is the most abundant metal in the earth's crust and turns up in any soil sample [1]. The logistical objection is heavier still. A program spraying continuously over entire continents would need thousands of aircraft, ground crews loading tanks at every airport, refineries producing the material, and decades of silence from every mechanic, pilot, and dispatcher involved. The trails themselves, meanwhile, follow flight corridors, and they appear and vanish exactly as humidity predicts.
Real geoengineering is being conducted without disclosure
This is the strongest version and it deserves a straight answer. Governments do fund research into stratospheric aerosol injection, and the reason is climate change, and it is published rather than hidden [3]. The precedent for concealment is also real: Operation Popeye seeded clouds over Southeast Asia for years to extend the monsoon and was kept from Congress until a Senate inquiry pried it open in 1972 [2]. So the claim that a government would do this secretly is not paranoid, it is historical. What the argument lacks is the present-day evidence. Solar radiation management remains at the modeling and small-experiment stage, no deployment has been detected by the atmospheric monitoring networks that would see it, and the visible trails behind airliners are demonstrably water. The honest position is that the suspicion is earned and the specific accusation is wrong.
It is cloud seeding, mistaken for something larger
Cloud seeding is real, operational, and unremarkable. Silver iodide is dispersed into clouds to encourage precipitation, and dozens of countries do it, including several American states running publicly funded programs. It is a small, local, disclosed technology whose effectiveness is still debated. Some chemtrail sightings are almost certainly seeding aircraft. The distance between that and a global covert spraying program is the distance between a garden hose and a flood, and the file is more interesting for knowing where the real thing ends.
