AREA 51
The US government denied the Nevada base even existed for decades, then declassified it. The records show secret aircraft, not saucers, but the alien claims have never gone away.
Area 51 is a United States Air Force facility at Groom Lake in the Nevada desert, part of the larger Nevada Test and Training Range. For most of its existence the government would not confirm that it existed, which is one reason it became a magnet for speculation. The secrecy had a documented purpose: the base was built to develop and test classified aircraft where they could not be seen [2].
The record of what flew there is now largely public. Area 51 was established in 1955 to test the Lockheed U-2 spy plane, then the A-12 OXCART, the CIA reconnaissance aircraft that led to the SR-71 Blackbird, and later stealth aircraft including the F-117. The base also evaluated Soviet aircraft that the United States had acquired, so pilots could learn how they performed [3]. These were among the most sensitive programs of the Cold War, and extreme secrecy around a remote airfield is exactly what they required.
The official silence ended in 2013. In response to a Freedom of Information Act request, the CIA released a declassified internal history of the U-2 and OXCART programs that named Area 51 and described its role, the first formal government acknowledgment of the base [1][4]. The document is about aircraft and reconnaissance, not anything extraterrestrial.
The alien reputation has a specific and traceable origin. In 1989 a man named Bob Lazar told a Las Vegas television reporter that he had worked at a site near Groom Lake reverse-engineering alien spacecraft. His account spread widely and fixed Area 51 in UFO culture, but investigators were unable to confirm the credentials and employment he claimed, and key parts of his story could not be substantiated [2]. The mainstream position is that Area 51 is a real and unusually secret military test site, that its secrecy is explained by the classified aircraft developed there, and that the alien claims rest on unverified testimony rather than the released record.

Alien craft are reverse-engineered there
The central claim, from Bob Lazar, is that he worked at a site called S-4 near Groom Lake studying recovered flying saucers and their propulsion [1][2]. The response: no independent evidence supports it, the schools and employers Lazar cited have no record matching his claims, and physical details he described have not been confirmed. His story is the single source that put aliens at Area 51, and it has never been corroborated in more than thirty years.
It stores recovered UFO material
A broader rumor holds that debris and craft recovered elsewhere, including the alleged Roswell wreckage, are studied or stored at the base [3]. Against the record, the recovered-material story depends on the Roswell claims, which have their own documented military explanation, and the extreme security at Area 51 is fully accounted for by the acknowledged aircraft programs. A base that must hide the world's most sensitive planes will look identical from the fence line whether or not it holds anything stranger.
The secrecy hides more than aircraft
The most cautious version makes no alien claim and argues only that a site this classified surely conceals programs still not disclosed. This is the hardest to dismiss and probably true in a narrow sense, since current-generation aircraft, drones, and sensors are exactly the kind of thing that stays secret. It supports the mundane reading rather than the exotic one, because the undisclosed work most consistent with a military test range is advanced hardware, not visitors, and the burden of proof for anything beyond that has not been met.
